Almost 1/5th  of United Kingdom educators are being bullied electronically, a survey on cyber-bullying revealed earlier this year.

The Teacher Support Network and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers reports the problem is becoming so serious that the Department for Education and Skills will need to ensure that anti-bullying policies which cover cyber-bullying are implemented.

The survey revealed that:

  • 17% of respondents have experienced cyber-bullying, in incidents ranging from "upsetting emails" and unwelcome text messages, to malicious use of websites and internet chat rooms.
  • 53% of respondents did not know whether their school had a cyber bullying policy
  • 39% said their schools did not have a cyber bullying policy
  • Of those schools which did have the policy, 19% said it was not properly enforced and 72% did not know if it was.
