1 in 4 Toronto Children Bullied

Posted on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 05:54AM by Registered CommenterInternet Safety Educator | CommentsPost a Comment

A study conducted by the University of Toronto, reports that 1 in 4 children in the Greater Toronto Area have been targeted by electronic bullies.

Over 2000 children were involved in the study, ranging from grades 6 to 11.  Other findings included:

  • 10% received unwelcome words or sex-related photos
  • 9% were asked to do something sexual on camera
  • 1 in 5 admitted to doing the bullying
  • Less than 10% told a parent

Parents, please talk to your children about cyberbullying.  Study after study reports children do NOT tell a trusted adult if they have been bullied electronically.   Telling a trusted adult was something I frequently stressed to my second and third graders.

Bullying, whether online or off,  can have serious consequences.
